Acne Rosacea is characterised by a red rash that may have some swelling and acne type bumps under the skin. It can vary in its severity with some people having nothing more than a little redness whereas for others it can be completely disfiguring and socially disabling. Severe cases of acne may need laser treatment as well as topical treatments and antibiotics.

Acne vulgaris usually involves whiteheads or blackheads and can be treated with topical solutions.

It is important to understand what type of acne you have to develop the best treatment plan for your skin. If you have severe acne or are susceptible to breakouts you should seek diagnosis from a dermatologist.

After acne has healed it can leave behind scars or spots for months after the infection. Scar tissue is when the skin tissue has been damaged and replaced with tougher, fibrous skin to protect the skin. Scars are more likely to be permanent the longer the acne or lesion remains. Also, if a pimple has been picked this too is likely to cause more permanent scarring. Some people have a tendency to scar more than others.

Lastly, the emotional impact of acne can be just as devastating in peoples’ school, social and professional lives. It can contribute to depression, low confidence and self esteem. This emotional impact should not be overlooked in the treatment of acne.
